Teaching second and third-graders about September 11 Patriot Day can be difficult. Using the book, Fireboat can help young learners understand without opening up to too many questions.
What is Patriot Day 9/11?
Patriot Day is observed each year in the United States on September 11th. This day commemorates the victims of the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001. It honors the memory of the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives. This day is dedicated to remembering those who died and recognizing the first responders who risked their lives to save others.
Patriot Day Celebrations
A nationwide moment of silence is often observed at 8:46 AM Eastern Time, marking when the first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Typically the U.S. flag is flown at half-staff at the White House, all government buildings, and many private homes. In New York, two beams of light representing the Twin Towers illuminate the New York City skyline from dusk to dawn.
Many Americans participate in volunteer activities and community service projects as part of the National Day of Service and Remembrance. Some communities host charity runs or walks to raise funds for organizations supporting veterans and first responders.
Patriot Day Information
Patriot Day is not a federal holiday; schools and businesses typically remain open. However, many organizations hold memorial events and ceremonies to honor the victims and heroes of 9/11.
