3 Easy Steps to Organizing Your Students

Technology

They love it and this one is so easy to implement!  Use a TIMER for everything!  I use it to transition from one subject to another, to prepare their desk for dismissal, and often to clean up math centers.  My boys always love a challenge and typically the girls just want to please everyone so we all WIN!!! CountDown Kings has fun FREE timers for Powerpoint.  Once they are on your screen, just minimize so you can continue using the rest of your board.  When we were working on measurement cards around the room, from my measurement unit, I would set the timer for each rotation.  It was perfect!

Desk Organization

In second grade, we unfortunately do not have very many text books.  They do have the cubbie under the desk-top for storage.  On the first day of school I begin instructing them how to keep their desk tidy.  They place all folders, notebooks, and paper on the left and all library books and text books on the right.  At least once a week we clean out desk for a treasure box treat! Boy do they love working for a treat!  We have found lunchbox items in the back of desk (sandwich baggies, fruit and all types of goodness).  This has not always been the case, but since we are eating lunch in the classroom daily…. <Thank You COVID>

CheckList for Organization

It may seem incredible simple, but putting the upcoming tasks for the week on the board can save me an hour a day from repeating myself.  Many students need constant redirecting.  Having a small list on the board can be just the ticket to helping them stay on track.  It does not take long for them to train themselves to read the board before asking, “What do I do next?”
